The name, the rock, and the reason we build the way we do.
Steinegg Cabinets is named after a small Swiss town — and everything we stand for comes from there.
The Name
Steinegg — rock corner.
Steinegg is a small town in Switzerland with a character all its own. At its centre sits a large, ancient rock — unmovable — that the local houses wrap around and the train tracks bend to avoid. The town’s name says it plainly: Stein (rock) + Egg (corner). Rock corner.
Mario Rusch spent the first twenty-seven years of his life there. At sixteen, he began his training as a cabinet maker — the same craft practiced by generations of artisans in the region. He never left the work.
When he eventually made his way to the Kootenays and founded Steinegg Cabinets in Nelson, BC in 2019, he brought one clear intention: to build the way he learned to build in Switzerland, where precision isn’t a selling point — it’s simply how things are done.
Why the Kootenays
Mountains, community, and people who care.
The Kootenays reminded Mario of home — mountains, a tight community, and people who care deeply about how things are built. He saw a region that deserved the same standard of quality he grew up with, and an opportunity to deliver it.
Every kitchen, closet, and built-in we produce is designed in 3D, precision-cut in our Nelson shop, and installed by carefully selected tradespeople — managed from start to finish by our team. That’s the Swiss way: never rush it, never cut corners, and never put your name on work you’re not proud of.

Steinegg Cabinets is a team of five — Mario and four skilled craftspeople who share the same commitment to quality. Every person on our team is chosen carefully, trained to our standard, and accountable for the work that leaves our shop. Small enough that the owner knows every project by name. Experienced enough to handle anything.
